Jayapura Arrival Connect to Wamena (Lunch and dinner included)

Upon arrival at Jayapura airport, you will be greeted by your English speaking guide and check in on the flight to Wamena around 11:00 am, right in the heart of the Baliem Valley. Flying past vertical mountain cliffs and mist clad valleys, you will understand why the place remained isolated for so many centuries! There are alcohol restrictions in the Baliem Valley. After passing local customs, we will explore the area and get first impressions of another world. Napua Hills with its panoramic view of the valley, Wesaput village and its traditional hanging bridge, some Dani villages and a traditional market. In the afternoon you will check-in at your hotel.

 

About Sentani Airport

Sentani Airport is an airport serving Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. The name of this airport is taken from a lake nearby.

Sentani Airport was a part of the large American facilities at Hollandia (now Jayapura), which was liberated from the Japanese during World War II by an American amphibious task force Code named Operation Reckless on 22 April 1944.

Sogokmo – Kurima (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

After breakfast, we take a 35 min drive to Sogokmo village in the southern part of Baliem valley, and start to have a day trek for about 4-5 hours through Dani sweet potatoes gardens and enjoy the gorgeous scenery, and will arrive at Kurima, the sub-district. Along the trail you will meet local people with friendly smiles, in their traditional clothes. After a picnic lunch we will head back to Sogokmo and drive back to Wamena for dinner and overnight stay.

 

About Baliem Valley

The Baliem Valley, sometimes known as the Grand Valley, of the highlands of Western New Guinea, is occupied by the Dani people. The main town in the valley is Wamena.

As far as the outside world was concerned, the discovery of the Baliem Valley and the unexpected presence of its large agricultural population in 1938. Since then the valley has gradually been opened up to a limited amount of tourism.

It is inhabited by the Dani people, also spelled Ndani, and sometimes conflated with the Lani group to the west, are a people from the central highlands of Western New Guinea.

Wamena – Jiwika – Pig Feast and Dance (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

After breakfast, we will drive 30 minutes to Jiwika, in the Northern part of Baliem valley to see the 250 years old Mummy. Then walk 10 minutes to the village of Anemoigi where you can view the Dani Mock battle and Pig feast. You will see how the Dani make fire traditionally, kill a pig with bow and arrow and cook them by placing it into a hot-burned stone with vegetables and sweet potatoes in the steaming pit on the ground. Lunch box will be provided or we can have grill pig and local food for our lunch. After lunch we will visit the Mili Mountain to see how the Dani women make salt in the traditional way. In the afternoon, we will drive back to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

 

About the Dani People

The Dani people, also spelled Ndani, are a people from the central highlands of western New Guinea (the Indonesian province of Papua).

They are one of the most populous tribes in the highlands, and are found spread out through the highlands. The Dani are one of the most well-known ethnic groups in Papua, due to the relatively numerous tourists who visit the Baliem Valley area where they predominate. “Ndani” is the name given to the Baliem Valley people by the Moni people, and, while they don’t call themselves Dani, they have been known as such since the 1926 Smithsonian Institution-Dutch Colonial Government expedition to New Guinea under Matthew Stirling who visited the Moni.

Wamena to Jayapura (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

After breakfast, we will head to the airport for a flight back to Jayapura. On arriving at Jayapura, we will have a full day sightseeing tour including Mac Arthur 2nd World War monument, Sentani Lake by long boat to visit Assey and Ayapo villages. We will be able to see how the Sentani tribe make the bark paintings. Lunch will be at Yougwa restaurant near the lake. After lunch, we will visit the Anthropology museum – opens Monday to Saturday. We will then head to the Hamadi market & Jayapura city. In the afternoon, we will check in at Swiss Belhotel in Jayapura for overnight stay and dinner.

 

About Lake Sentani

Lake Sentani is tropical, shallow, and at low-altitude. It is an open lake located at the northeast extremity of the Intan Jaya Regency in the Indonesian province of Papua, about 20 kilometres from the provincial capital, Jayapura City.

The lake, which is considered by the local population as the home of the rainbows, is part of the Cyclops Strict Nature Reserve and contains several species of fish that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Lake Sentani lies at the foot of the Mesozoic mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Cyclops ophiolite mountains, in a fault-controlled depression at an elevation of 73 metres above the level of the sea.

After breakfast, you will be taken to the Sentani Airport for your flight home or to your next destination.
